Long Distance Library

FAQ's

Q. Why aren't you sending gently used books that could simply be donated?
A. The cost of shipping to Namibia is very expensive. The booklets we use are small in size and light in weight, reducing the total shipping cost. In addition, this is a creative writing learning experience for both the Namibian learners and the student authors in the United States.

Q. Why is there a $2.15 charge per booklet?
A. The Long Distance Library is a non-profit organization, therefore the $2.15/booklet charge is the bare minimum to cover the cost of the booklet and our cost to ship the booklets both to you and then back to Kyle in Namibia.  After much research, the blank books we chose to use for the LDL are the cheapest ones we could find for purchase; we order them in large quantity to reduce the price even furtherAlso, we need everyone participating to use the same booklets for this project, to keep the packaging of the booklets uniform in shape and consequently the shipping weight as low as possible.

Q. Do you have a completed sample booklet that would be available for us to look at?
A. Yes, we will be including a completed sample booklet with all orders.

Q. In the case of bulk orders, how have others raised money to cover the cost of the booklets?
A. Some ideas include:
1.  Do a "Dress Down Day" where each student brings in $1-$2 as a donation to the LDL project.
2. School Cafeteria Bake Sale.
3. Collect "Pennies and Loose Change" as a school fundraiser, and make it into a competition to see which grade raises the most.
4. Inform the parents about the Long Distance Library project and ask for the $2.00 donation directly, as we anticipate the same enthusiasm as everyone we have spoken to about LDL and think they would be willing to donate to a good cause.  It benefits their own children by teaching creative writing skills, and is also a service project.
